I’m not sure I could say enough about how much I loved “All About Evil”! This movie is just….everything! It was even written and directed by a drag queen! (Thank you Peaches Christ, it was seriously so awesome!) It’s wayyy over-the-top, it’s funny, it’s got plenty in the way of blood and gore and I always love a horror movie about loving horror movies. The concept at play here is also fairly unique, something I’ve only seen a few times before, and, of course, executed very differently. Having seen so many horror films, it’s particularly nice when I’m treated to something different, something I haven’t seen done twenty.. thirty.. times before. There may not be a whole lot of depth (though maybe there is still some…) but there is a whole lot of silly and dramatic fun!
“All About Evil” centers around Deborah Tennis, who has been bullied and ridiculed all her life, by her school peers, and most of all by her step mother. Her father, the owner of the local movie theatre, always dreamed she would become a famous actress and always believed in her “star quality”….but, alas, Deborah is just a simple librarian. When her father passes away and leaves her the theatre, one thing leads to another.. and “Deborah Tennis” finally taps into her “star quality” when, with the help of her bizarre little film crew, she starts making gruesome and gritty horror shorts. Everyone loves them…what they don’t know is that the murders being portrayed in the films are very much real. As Deborah’s ego grows, so does her madness, and things get… a little out of control.
Featuring a host of eccentric characters, including a set of macabre twins so visibly evil it’s just hilarious this is a movie every horror-lover needs to enjoy. While still clever in many ways — for example, the way each horror short spoofs a story from well known literature, while also doubling as a warning/lesson on movie theatre etiquette haha— the basic plot is still mostly ridiculous and things only get more and more outlandish as the movie goes on…it’s a lot of fun ;).
