Review: Babysitter Wanted 2008
I really, really liked this one, it tried something different and, for that alone, I think it deserves credit (oh but don’t worry, it has plenty more to offer). “Babysitter Wanted” really mixed things up and, unlike many critics, I never saw that as a point of failure. I mean, isn’t that something that we want out of a horror movie? To be shocked? To be surprised, or taken aback? To not know where the story is heading? I know I enjoyed the plot/category change, it worked really well as far as I’m concerned. I thought this film was truly wonderful, it starts as a fairly standard ‘babysitter slasher flick’, it creates an atmosphere of unease.. then totally switches things up like halfway through! (“halfway” is a super rough guess on my part though)
“Babysitter Wanted” tells the story of an innocent, religious girl in need of money for college, she sees an ad for a babysitter on the campus bulletin board and sets up an interview. Everything seems fine with the family and Sam, the quiet little boy in the cowboy costume that Angie will be babysitting..but there’s a scary-looking man who seems to be following Angie, perhaps waiting to get her all-but-alone in a remote, rural farmhouse?? Except that this movie isn’t what it seems at all. But I’m not even going to say any more about the plot. This movie is scary, creepy, unpredictable, bloody, and even throws in some dark humour, it really has everything and keeps you entertained from start to finish…well, the ending is okay (but “endings are hard”). I do think this movie is still pretty underrated, but most critics/viewers seem to recognize a truly awesome movie when they see one. On that note, here’s another glowing review of this movie that I found totally awesome! (the review, not the movie…well, both then.)
