I’ll start by clarifying that I actually watched this one under the title “The Butchers” however “Death Factory” is an alternate choice and it must have been released under both.. However, while “The Butchers” would appear to be the more popular title, I personally vastly prefer “Death Factory”. Anyway, usually I only review movies I thought were amazing (or better!) but this one was such a remarkable mix of awful and awesome, that I just felt the need to write about it. The film begins with what turns out to be a somewhat unnecessary opening scene, at least in my opinion, anyway, the scene itself is reasonably decent, though certainly a little “ham-fisted”. But once that’s done with, we move to the future, in the middle of nowhere. A man who appears to be the last remaining resident of his town has set up a pretty nifty little museum of famous serial killers and he’s visited by a mysterious gentleman determined to buy the place and certainly not willing to take ‘no' for an answer. After their…business meeting..ahem, the mysterious man is now free to go about his sinister work …with his black magic book of the dead! Meanwhile, also in the middle of nowhere, a bus of a strange assortment of people…I was never too clear on why they were on the bus…something religious..which raises the question of why there are two dumb spoiled girls and two goth druggies there at all… but anyway, let me get to the good parts, so of course the bus breaks down and the group ends up at the serial killer museum, which is now “under new management”, and has also gotten a whole lot more real! Turns out the black magic was to bring the six serial killers back to life and now the group have to contend with John Wayne Gacy, Albert Fish, Jeffrey Dahmer, The Zodiac Killer, Ed Gein, and an awesome new take on “Jack the Ripper”. This is where the movie gets interesting, maybe even worth watching? I thought so. We get to see the killers, most of which are interestingly portrayed, my personal favourites were Gacy, Dahmer and of course Jack the Ripper. Ed Gein was a real letdown but I’m over it. I personally enjoyed the bizarre assortment of characters even if there’s little logic to their individual presence in the story.. other than as slasher fodder.. it still made for a fairly interesting watch. So, this movie has a decent amount of gore, it’s certainly silly but nevertheless entertaining and pretty creative, really, (and we even get some undeniably nice girl-on-girl action).. The ending makes no sense but that’s okay, overall I didn’t regret watching “The Butchers”. (Death Factory)
