I should definitely preface the following adoration of this masterpiece of body-horror, with a big warning! This movie is not to be entered into lightly! To sum this movie up, it’s bloody, it’s sexual, it’s revolting, but it’s also such a good movie, provided you are into this type of disturbing, twisted, gory horror.
It’s beautiful and horrific, vulgar and disgusting, and, at times, it’s even funny. It’s fantastic! The acting is magnificent (especially from our main character), the script is so perfect and the ending is brutal and shocking and just so perfectly done.
Excision centers around a teenage girl, Pauline, who is so much more disturbed and delusional than anyone in her life realizes. Pauline is obsessed with becoming a surgeon, her little sister suffers from cystic fibrosis and Pauline is convinced that one day she’ll be able to save her sister’s life. Pauline also enjoys regular psycho-sexual dreams and even waking fantasies, these dreams/daydreams typically involve version(s) of herself/sex/surgery and plenty of blood… Pauline’s parents are pretty pathetic, but to be fair to her mother, her father is so much more useless; and dealing with a sick child, a disturbed teen and a useless husband all alone must be wearing… Her mother’s solution to an angry disturbed teenager? Cotillion….Yeah…Pauline doesn’t stand a chance…
If you think you can handle it, I highly recommend it! And if you’re not sure, try watching the opening scene, it’s a decent indication of the rest of the movie. (but there will be “worse” scenes to come, certainly!)
