Review: Hell House LLC 2015
This was great, a fantastic found footage film, I personally love found footage and think there are plenty of awesome found footage horror films out there, but I am also aware that many seem to hold the opinion that most of them are terrible… Fortunately, however, even most of those people seem to think “Hell House” is brilliant! The film is more specifically a mockumentary, which happens to be one of my favourite horror genres, and I think it was done very well. It goes back and forth from the mockumentary to the footage that they have found, slowly explaining things and showing us what really happened.
“Hell House” begins with a short paragraph explaining that a ‘haunted house’ attraction’s opening night ended in chaos and multiple deaths, but that somehow no one is really able to explain what exactly happened… We are shown a short video that was taken by someone in the haunted house and uploaded to Youtube, but that sheds very little light on the events. Afterwards, the events of that night are concealed from the public as much as possible, but the film crew manages to find the only surviving member of the haunted house’s team, who reveals that much of what happened as they were setting up the haunted house was filmed, and she hid these tapes from the police, but gives them to the film crew, and then we are of course shown that footage. For the house in which they set up their attraction, the crew unwittingly chose a house that was already truly haunted.
Now while that may sound a little lame.. and predictable, what follows, is truly frightening and oh so effective. “Hell House” manages to take things that are predictable or overdone, and make them actually scary. Little by little most things are explained, but we are left with the perfect amount to think about and decide on our own. We are even treated to a little gore towards the finish and a wicked twist of an ending.
I loved this movie, Ive seen a lot of horror and it’s not often I find a film the least bit frightening, but “Hell House” is so well done, it’s super creepy with a few truly scary moments and I highly recommend it!
