Review: Seventh Moon 2008
Very good, fairly obscure so I don’t know if I’m in the minority in liking this film, but I really thought it was quite effective. Perhaps a little rushed and the last quarter was an interesting way to go, but overall I really liked “Seventh Moon”. I would even go as far as to deem this film scary, it was certainly undeniably creepy, and at times, so much so, that I definitely found it frightening. The film is based around an old Chinese myth that during the seventh month, during a full moon, the dead will enter our world looking for sacrifices. This is, of course, a concept that needed a good horror movie, and I think this one did manage to do it justice.
“Seventh Moon” really has only two (arguably 3) main characters, Melissa and Yul. They are young newlyweds on their honeymoon in China, and unfortunately they could not have picked a worse time to go… They’re on their way to visit Yul’s relatives, and find themselves alone at night in a remote village, seemingly abandoned by their cab driver, Ping. Pretty soon things get much worse and they are descended upon by a swarm of horrible, naked, blood-thirsty undead spirits!! Suddenly they must struggle to survive the night, but with the whole village rooting against them, they don’t stand much chance at all…
Like I said earlier, this film does feel a little rushed, (..and at less than 90 minutes, they could have taken their time a bit more..) and I do wish some of the creepier scenes had been more drawn out, but all in all, I found “Seventh Moon” pretty effective, very creepy, and even scary at times. This film delivers a reasonable amount of gore and the effects may not be amazing but the makers found ways to get as much out of their budget as they could. I would recommend this film to avid horror watchers who won’t quibble over its imperfections, but rather appreciate the awesome that is incontrovertibly also present.
