Review — The Autopsy of Jane Doe 2016
It’s no easy feat for a horror movie to be so effectively creepy and unsettling as The Autopsy of Jane Doe. This is a remarkable film, it’s quiet in a brilliantly unnerving manner, with rarely more than 2 speaking characters in a scene, and the creepy setting of a very big, old fashioned house, with a comparatively small, underground morgue, coupled with a number of scenes taking place within the elevator, lends to the overall claustrophobic sense of dread that fills the film.
The Autopsy of Jane Doe begins with a confusing scene of a grisly multiple murder, police find the body of a young woman half buried in the basement that doesn’t seem to “fit” with the rest of the crime-scene, but at the same time the detective feel sure she is a key component in the whole mystery. The body is sent for autopsy, and enter our main protagonists, father and son coroners, Tommy and Austin. Once the autopsy of the girl begins, things quickly get creepy and …confusing. I don’t want to say too much more about the story, it’s much better to allow the film to reveal itself to you than to know any more than I’ve so far divulged. I watched it not knowing anything and it was an awesome experience in horror. I tend to go for blood and gore and more blood, when I’m choosing a horror movie to watch, but that’s not scary. The Autopsy of Jane Doe is scary, it will stay with you. You’ll think about it when you’re alone, or in the dark. It’s masterful the way this film gets under the skin and makes you feel cold and hopeless …before you remind yourself, of course, feeling a little silly.. it’s not real…and yet, still..
Yeah I really enjoyed this one. Quietly terrifying, haunting. Brilliant.
