I know, I know, this movie was HORRIBLY received (RottenTomatoes gave it 8%!!) …but (surprise, surprise) I have just always LOVED it! Yes, yes, it’s not perfect in the slightest, in fact, the film really doesn’t even actually make sense! And still…I love it.
I love Jim Carrey in serious roles, and I love even more when he narrates serious films. I have always found this film fascinating, because, although I do agree that the concern surrounding “23” is silly, this film definitely proves that there is a difference between ‘silly’ and ‘unfounded’… That is, to say, there’s undeniably a lot of correlative “evidence” that the number could hold some sinister “meaning”. Don’t misunderstand, I find the obsession, itself, to be fascinating; that is, the fact that people would have ever attached enough meaning to a number that they then search for more and more evidence, warping and manipulating numbers and dates to fit their fears…. I watch this film for aspects other than the loose little ‘story’, I watch for the narration and for the story within the story of the movie, which is much more interesting.. and I watch because despite the many plot holes, and the silly little moments, underneath all that is the basic story of a man, obsessed..a man, losing his mind, and I think that if you can look past the, admittedly numerous, other issues, then that aspect of the ‘story’ still works… No matter how many terrible critiques I hear of this film, I will always love it…and here’s a couple others who actually liked it too! https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_number_23/reviews/?sort=fresh
