I was shocked how much I loved this movie!!….well..at first… See, it starts off brilliantly and for the first forty or so minutes it just keeps getting better and better! It’s surprisingly clever and darkly hilarious, with so many awesome, classic/well known references, from children’s fairy tales to other horror films. However, though I absolutely LOVED it at the beginning, it definitely declines, and then at the very end it fully falls apart in my opinion…but, like I always say, “endings are hard”, and it really is just the last few minutes and the absurd text before the credits.
Wolf Creek 2 begins with an awesome opening scene that could serve as a lesson to entitled cops who give out made-up tickets just to meet their “quotas” ;), and we are re-introduced to our sadistic killer from the first film, Mick Taylor. Next we meet Rutger and Katarina, a German couple backpacking through the outback, (this part of the film is actually subtitled) and we see them enjoying their trip, but also their struggles to make their way from place to place. These struggles culminate in a night spent camping in the middle of nowhere, at which point they attract the attention of one Mick Taylor. After a rather grisly (but awesome!) scene, Katarina makes a run for it and is picked up by Paul Hammersmith, who quickly becomes the true protagonist of the film and he and Mick begin terrifying game of cat-and-mouse.
Even after the film begins its descent into little more than a torture-flick, it does remain somewhat interesting…even if it really just becomes a bizarre and horrific lesson on Australian history… It does actually pick back up again briefly, with some glorious blood and gore, but then, as I mentioned, I really didn’t care for the ending, its really silly and far-fetched. Overall though, I definitely did enjoy this film, and far more than the first Wolf Creek movie, the sequel certainly has a lot more substance and was a lot more fun to watch!
