“You’re Next” is beyond fantastic, it’s so much more than a typical slasher, it’s not even a standard ‘turn-on-the-killer’ slasher, this movie really is just filled with surprises, and it’s awesome. I’d call it a dark-comedy/slasher with a few brilliant twists. Featuring some amazingly inventive kills, a very clever script, and a story that really keeps you guessing, “You’re Next” is absolutely one of the best of it’s genre.
“You’re Next” tells the story of a rather dysfunctional upper class family, the ‘children’ are grown and have all brought their current partners to celebrate their parent’s wedding anniversary. The dysfunction is apparent right away, we have little brother Felix and his ‘dark and different’ girlfriend “Zee”, little sister Aimee and her philosophical ‘hipster’ boyfriend “Tariq”, and then seemingly normal, eldest brother, Crispian and his seemingly normal girlfriend, Zoe. As if the weekend wasn’t going to be uncomfortable and torturous enough, with the clashing medley of personalities thrown in with the usual guilt and familial obligation… but of course there are three sadistic masked killers determined to pick this family off one by one…but why?
“You’re Next” is totally entertaining from start to finish it even delivers on the blood and violence. It’s a fun commentary on the upper class family, watching how they react and learning family secrets, seeing if they can possibly work together, if they even want to try. All the while wondering who are these people in the would-be-cute-in-another-context animal masks and why are they so hell-bent on killing this family?
Yeah this movie is pretty much awesome in every way, recommended to all!
